I specialise in a range of psychological issues relating to emotional, physical, learning and social communication difficulties in children and young people.
Therapeutic support: I use a child-centred approach, engaging children creatively to support them to feel at ease. My sessions gently encourage the motivations of the child or young person through exploring their own goals, wishes and values. For younger children I employ play-based strategies and consultation with parents in order to support the child’s social and emotional development. In terms of therapeutic approach, I incorporate a range of models in my work to suit each individual child and also carefully consider the needs of siblings and parents as well. Approaches include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Attachment, Mindfulness and Positive Behaviour Support. I believe in building resilience in children and families through early recognition and intervention. I work sensitively with children/young people, families and professionals to make sense of difficulties, supporting a shared understanding and positive ways forward.
Complex assessment: I am skilled at working with children presenting with unclear combinations of emotional, learning and/or social communication difficulties. Complex assessment relies on piecing together different aspects of a child’s development drawing on social, psychological factors as well as cognitive and educational assessment (where appropriate). The resulting report provides a comprehensive ‘snapshot’ of the child’s strengths, difficulties and needs and most importantly promotes their potential.
I have an NHS background and currently hold a highly specialist position within NHS Paediatric services. I have additionally worked in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and have over 15 years experience of working with children who have a diagnosis of autism. I am experienced at working with pre-school as well as school-aged children, providing psychological assessments for specialist pre-school and school-aged teams in South Gloucestershire.
I am registered with the Health Professionals Council (HPC) and the British Psychological Society.
